Shaving is one of my least favorite personal hygiene chores. I don’t like dealing with the mess of shaving cream and the hassle of dull blades. There has to be an easier, cleaner way to get the job done. Of course there are always electric razors but do they do the job as thoroughly and as well as a blade? That is the question I sought to answer by researching electric razors when I came across the Philips Norelco 1280X/47 SensoTouch 3D Electric Razor with JetClean System. The reviews looked good so I did some research to share with you.
The Norelco 1280X/47 is an electric razor powered by a lithium ion battery for a long run time, a quick recharge, and a long battery life. The Li-Ion battery technology also allows the razor to not loose performance as the battery discharges which means the blades continue to spin at full speed, reducing the risk of grabbing and pulling instead of cutting.
There are several advanced razor technologies included. The first is Philips Norelco’s Gyroflex 3D system. This is a design for mounting the heads in such a way that all three tilt, flex, and pivot independently. This allows for each head to remain flat against your skin even on your chin and neck where the natural curvatures cause the shaving heads on most razors to lift away.
Also included is Norelco’s UltraTrack heads. These are larger to cover more area in each pass. In addition, Norelco has redesigned the openings in the head and included slots to catch the longest hairs, channels for the slightly shorter hairs, and holes for the shortest hair and stubble. This ensures the smoothest possible shave with less pulling if you go a little to long between shaves.
A nice inclusion is the Aquatec system that allows you to shave with lotion or gel if you choose. A lotion or gel can help prepare and protect your skin for a close shave with less irritation. The Aquatec system also allows the razor to be used with the included JetClean base which will completely clean and lubricate your razor and recharge it so it will be ready for the next shave.
Features and Benefits
• The Norelco 1280X/47 is designed to shave either dry of with lotion or shave gel via their Aquatec System so you are assured of the closest possible shave with the absolute minimum irritation.
• The razor has three heads, each of which covers up to fifty percent more skin with each pass and are designed with slots, channels, and holes to pick up all hairs, from the longest to the shortest.
• Each head is mounted in a way that allows independent motion in all directions to keep all three heads properly positioned against your face even around curved areas on your chin and jawline.
• The JetClean system is included to clean, lubricate, dry, and recharge your razor all at once without manual disassembly.
• The lithium ion battery included can be fully charged in about an hour and give you an hour of runtime.
The Norelco 1280X/47 has pleased most of the reviewers that have shared their experiences. 68% of them gave it a perfect five star review and 83% rated it four stars or better. They raved about the closeness of the shave and the lack of irritation found with other shavers. They appreciated being able to shave with lotion or gel to further assure their skin was not irritated.
Nearly all reviewers agree that the Norelco 1280X/47 gives an exceptionally close shave and is less irritating than other electric shavers. The combination of the new heads and their independent motion makes sure that all hairs are picked up, reducing or altogether eliminating the missed patches that are common with other designs.
The razor is said to be very quiet which is a definite plus. A noisy razor may be alright for a woman shaving her legs but when shaving our faces, the razor is right next to our ears, so a loud razor is even more uncomfortable to use.
Another positive is the long lasting battery. You get about an hour of run time with each charge and it charges from empty to full in about an hour. There also were no issues that I can find about the batteries prematurely loosing their ability to hold a charge, something I commonly look for with Li-Ion batteries.
I found several complaints about Philips Norelco’s customer service. While this always causes me to look a bit closer, I found nearly as many people saying they had no problems. Since more people with negative experiences will share, if I can find almost as many positive experiences, I feel confident that there isn’t a systemic problem at the company. However, I did see reports of denied warranty claims due to purchase from non-approved vendors so for peace of mind, you may want to be sure you are purchasing from Amazon and not a third party seller.
A much more serious complaint was about the lack of availability of replacement heads for this model. Philips Norelco recommends replacing the cutting heads annually since, according to their figures, the heads will have cut approximately four and a half million hairs in a years time. The problem that came up is that they discontinued the RQ 12 replacement heads for this razor. This lead to the price for new heads to double as supplies dropped. This is no longer an issue as they are releasing a redesigned shaving head, the RQ 12+, on September 1. This seems to be more of an issue with them failing to communicate with their customers than them having a product on the market with no replacement parts.
With the great reviews and the promise of a near perfect shaving experience, the Philips Norelco 1280X/47 SensoTouch 3D Electric Razor with JetClean System appears to be the electric razor to beat. Since the problem with the replacement heads has been resolved, I can confidently recommend it to anyone looking to make their daily shave less of a hassle without giving up their expectation of a smooth, clean shave.
