Chances are, if you’re ever bought an electric shaver or an electric toothbrush, you’ve heard of Braun. Considered pioneers, innovators and leaders in the world of electric shavers since the 1950s, Braun offers some of the best electric shavers on the market. We’ve chosen the “best of the best” and reviewed only the best Braun electric shavers, below. But first, a little on how we rated them.
How We Rated the Electric Shavers
Men want a close shave, a comfortable shave, and they don’t want any missed hairs when they’re done shaving. They want a shaver that will excel in all these aspects, especially when shaving in difficult areas like corners and recesses of the facial area. Extra perks which consumers also look for in electric shavers are:
- the ability to shave both wet and dry
- quick charging & long-lasting charge
Last but not least, one thing the consumer gets with every Braun electric shaver is superb design, something Braun has always been known for, since the 1930s when their company started to take off.
The following reviews of the best Braun electric shavers consider all these qualities. In general, the higher the “series” number on a Braun shaver, the more features it has, and therefore the more it will cost. Reviewed below are Series 7, Series 5 and Series 3. Consequently, these shavers cover all budget ranges.
Top 4 Braun Electric Shavers
Braun Series 7 790cc Pulsonic Shaver
Premium features you’re getting in the more pricey Series 7 shavers include Optifoil and ActiveLift. More on those in a bit, but the main feature you’re paying for in a shaver like the 790cc is sonic technology. Braun also makes sonic electric toothbrushes, so maybe they borrowed from the toothbrush lab for the technology on these. Basically the shaver part that lifts the hair vibrates at 10,000 micro vibrations per minute. This allows no flat hairs to escape the blade, resulting in the most complete shave possible.
Of course this shaver has the famous Braun foil system (they all do) but with the premium shavers like this 7900cc it’s an even better foil system called Optifoil. Optifoil allows the blades to get pretty darn close to the skin without actually cutting it…just the hair.
This shaver also has Activelift, which is Braun’s solution for getting at flat-hairs on the skin. It lifts the hair up vertically so that it can then be lopped off by the razor’s edge for a completely close shave.
What makes this model stand out is the super-quick 5-minute charge. With just 5 minutes of charging, the owner of this model will be able to shave for almost an hour, cord-free (it’s 50 minutes, to be exact).
Braun Series 7-760cc Pulsonic Shaver System
The 760cc offers Optifoil and ActiveLift as well as Clean & Renew, like the 790cc. Both the 790cc and the 760cc come with the Clean & Renew system, a wonderful feature no matter who you ask. The base of the shaver is a multifunctioning magic box of tricks that performs all of the following:
- it will clean your shaver
- it will charge your shaver
- it will lubricate your shaver…
- …then dry it
They call this a cleaning center, so much more than a charging base! What this means for those who choose this shaver is a virtually maintenance-free electric shaver. All you do is switch out the cartridge every three months or so. It doesn’t clean automatically: you have to tell it to clean by pressing a button. It’s recommended that it be cleaned often. You may also choose to clean it manually.
The 760cc, like the 790cc, also has the option to choose from 3 levels of intensity:
- Extra Sensitive
Different modes are for different skin types and also different areas of the face.
Braun Series 5 550cc Shaver System
The Series 5 Shaver System has many of the premium features the Series 7 has, but at a more affordable price. The only things it doesn’t have is the ability to switch to the 3 different shaving modes, ActiveLift (however, it does have something similar: see below), and the ability to also dry your shaver. It does, however, clean, lubricate and charge it.
It does not have the quick 5-minute charge that the Series 7 shavers have. It’s a one-hour charge, and even then it doesn’t last quite as long as a Series 7 charge.
This Series 5 Braun Shaver has UltraActiveLift, with the oscillating trimmer to lift the flat-lying hairs so men don’t have to shave repeatedly to get a close shave. It’s a slight variation on ActiveLift but similar results.
Braun 3 Series 380S-4 Wet & Dry Shaver
What’s great about the 3 Series besides its incredibly affordable price (half the price of the Series 7 shavers reviewed above) is the fact that it has some of the premium features of the more expensive models for again, half the price. For example, as its name indicates the 380S-4 is a Wet & Dry shaver that performs well both in the shower and at the sink. In fact, it’s 100% waterproof.
This has what Braun calls the “Triple Action FreeFloat System”, which delivers a very close shave. Without ActiveLift, found on the Series 7 models, it’s not quite as close a shave but it still gets the job done in a perfectly suitable way for most men who want to only pay around $100 for their shavers.
You don’ get the Clean & Renew system on this model, so if that’s important this is not the shaver for you.
If money is no object, then either one of the Braun Series 7 Electric Shavers will be an excellent choice. They’ve got everything an electric shaver can possibly have these days, plus great Braun style and an expected shelf life of 7 years.
However, if you’d rather not spend a lot then the Series 5 is a wonderful compromise if you can’t spring for the Series 7. For a fraction of the price you’re getting almost all the premium features of the more expensive models, even if you’re not getting Braun’s latest technology.
The Series 3 shaver is a nice choice if you really don’t want to pay for the Clean & Renew System and wouldn’t use it if you had it.
